What Protectant Statues From Fading?
When you've purchased one or more resin to decorate your outdoor space, you've chosen one of the most durable materials available. Lightweight and easy to relocate on a whim, resin statues come in a variety shapes and sizes. They often are painted with colors that fade over time when exposed to the elements. Fortunately, a coat or two of a clear protectant will preserve the colors on your resin statuary for years to come.
Preprotectant Steps
If you've allowed your resin statue to sit outside for a period of time before you decide to apply protectant to it, it's probably accumulated at least a thin layer of dirt and grime. Before applying any protectant, clean the statue gently from top to bottom. Fill a bucket with a mixture of warm water and mild dish soap, and wash the statue using a soft cloth, being sure to clean all crevices as well. If necessary, use a soft-bristled brush to scrub the nooks and crannies. Rinse the statue with water from the hose without using a spray attachment. Allow the statue to dry thoroughly.
Protectant Product
To protect the paint on a resin statue, it's necessary to use a product that provides protection from ultraviolet rays. Choose a clear, spray-on polyurethane product that states specifically that it provides UV protection. Such products are available in shiny or matte finishes. While UV-resistant sealants also come in liquid forms that you can use to paint the statue, such products may go on thicker than a spray and result in a gummy finish. They also take longer to dry and are more likely to show brush strokes from the application process.
Protectant Application
When it is time to apply the spray-on protectant to the resin statue, choose a day with little or no wind and low humidity. Set up shop in an open outdoor area where you can spray the statue without getting the spray on nearby items. Spread out newspapers to create an area much larger than the statue. Shake the can vigorously and spray the entire statue with a thin, even coat from a distance of 12 to 24 inches. Allow the initial coat to dry thoroughly before applying a second layer. Check the product directions when in doubt.
Postprotectant Care
Once your resin statue is sufficiently protected, there still are steps you can take to preserve it and prolong its life. Periodically wash the statue to keep it looking its best and remove accumulated dirt. Move the statue indoors when the temperature drops to freezing or below. When moisture accumulates on the statue, freezing and thawing at will, it can cause cracks in the resin, ruining the statue and damaging the polyurethane coating.
